DAVENPORT – The United States Chamber of Commerce, the largest business advocacy group in the world, has endorsed Republican congressional candidate Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 2nd District.
“The Chamber aims to protect free enterprise and pro-business priorities in Congress by vigorously supporting policies that advance economic growth, help create jobs, and promote fiscal responsibility,” said Thomas Donahue, the Chamber’s chief executive officer. “Looking ahead, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce remains invested in supporting critical legislation that will drive economic growth and assist job creators.”
He told Miller-Meeks, a state senator from Ottumwa and former director of the Iowa Department of Public Health, that “your positions on these issues earned you this endorsement.”
“I am proud to accept this endorsement, and I will always fight for U.S. businesses and workers,” Miller-Meeks said. “Iowans and Americans are suffering from the current shutdown of our economy. We need leaders in Congress who will work to reopen our economy in a safe and measured approach. I am the only candidate in this race that has a plan to safely reopen our economy, and I believe this endorsement reflects that.”
Miller-Meeks is an ophthalmologist and a 24-year U.S. Army veteran representing Senate District 41 in the Iowa Senate, which includes Davis, Jefferson, Van Buren, and Wapello counties. She is seeking the seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, a seven-term Democratic congressman. After 14 years of Democrat control, Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District is now rated as a “toss-up,” according to national political forecasters. Of the 31 congressional districts won by Trump and held by Democrats, Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District is the only open seat.
