REP. JON THORUP ENDORSES MILLER-MEEKS FOR CONGRESS: “SHE’LL TAKE THE LEAD ON KEY ISSUES”

THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2020

OTTUMWA – State Rep. Jon Thorup of Knoxville announced his endorsement of state Sen. Mariannette Miller-Meeks for Congress in the 2nd District today.

“As a law enforcement officer, service to our community and country is important to me,” said Thorup, a former state fire marshal who is a senior trooper with the Iowa State Patrol. “That is why I’m proud to support a 24-year Army veteran for U.S. Congress. Mariannette will bring a desperately needed trait to Congress: leadership.”

He continued, “Southern Iowa needs someone who will never quit fighting for health care reform, fair trade deals and a growing economy. Serving with Mariannette in the legislature, I know she’ll take the lead on these issues and will never quit fighting for us because she’s respected for those very qualities at the Statehouse.”

Miller-Meeks, an ophthalmologist, was appointed director of the Iowa Department of Public Health in 2010 by then-Gov. Terry Branstad where she served for three years. Thorup said Miller-Meeks continued to demonstrate her leadership and health care background in her role as the chair of the Human Resources committee during the 2019 session.

“I am honored to have the support and confidence of Representative Thorup,” said Miller-Meeks. “Law enforcement officers like Jon put their lives on the line every day and work tirelessly to make our communities safe. They deserve federal partners who will work alongside them to make sure they have the resources and support they need to keep us and themselves safe. I’ll be that kind of representative.”
