Miller-Meeks Statement on Iowa House GOP
Choice of Speaker-select Patrick Grassley as Speaker

OTTUMWA – State Sen. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, an Ottumwa Republican and 2nd Congressional District candidate, issued the following statement following the Iowa House Republican Caucus vote to choose state Rep. Patrick Grassley, R-New Hartford, to succeed Speaker Linda Upmeyer, R-Clear Lake, upon her decision to step down:

“As Iowa’s first female House speaker, Linda Upmeyer has been an inspiration to so many people across our state, especially women, no matter their political registration. She also set a very high bar for hard work, leadership, integrity and results not just during her three-plus years as speaker but throughout her 17 years as a representative. Her legacy will be an enduring one.

“Throughout his tenure, Pat Grassley has demonstrated a keen understanding of our state’s budget and priorities. His leadership on the Appropriations Committee has delivered balanced budgets, cuts to wasteful spending and conservative policies that have moved this state forward. Like his grandfather, Representative Pat Grassley holds public service in his heart. I congratulate him on his election as Speaker and look forward to working with him in the next legislative session.

“I congratulate Pat, wish him all the best during his tenure as speaker and look forward to working with him on legislation to improve the lives of Iowans.”
